They were shaved, forced to undress and hold their belt and shoes. Then a disinfection and a warm shower. Finally their were given now prisoner clothes.

Why did Elie lie to Stein about his knowledge of the man’s family?
Because, since Elie has been in this nightmare he has seen so much pain and suffering he did not want to cause that grieve to one of his only family members. So lying was Elie only way to keep Stein's hope and will to live alive.

What change occurs in Elie’s faith?
He still believes that there's a god in existence but a lot of his previous studious nature of the Jewish bible has began to mean nothing anymore. Why would He let them be doomed to this fate that non of them deserved? That was his main question to God Elie had. So since his arrive at the camps, he no longer prayed, nor did he care to.
