Madam Schachter: A quiet, fifty year old women. With tense, burning eyes.

Elie: A 15 year old boy, who's heart was turned to stone and turned silent.

SETTING:

Where were the prisoners brought?
Kaschu, then to Auschwitz
How were they transported?
After being transported to the main camp, then they had to run from camp to camp.

Describe the treatment of Madam Shachter. Why is she treated this way?
She was screaming of fire in the distance and the younger men beat her, in an attempt to silence her yelling. But it only temporarily worked, and she would scream again and being assaulted again.

Why is Madame Shachter screaming? What is she screaming about? What could she be predicting?
She was screaming because she claimed she saw fire, a large furnace about to consume them. This terrified her because she was already separated from most of her family but her youngest son and did not want to die. She was predicting the future deaths of her, her family, and her fellow Jews.
